Sizing Charts
When you decide to make a pattern remember that sizing for patterns are much different then ready-made clothing. The measurements you take body should include bust/chest, waist, hip and back waist length. Pattern sizes are much smaller then the clothing you find in the store. For example if you normally wear a ladies size 6, then you would most likely wear a size 10 in pattern. Take accurate measurements using a flexible cloth tape measure found in any fabric store or Walmart in their craft section. Compare those measurements to the sizing chart found on the back of a pattern envelope. If you are making a blouse/jacket or dress you should focus on the bust/chest and waist measurements. If you are making a skirt or pants then use your waist and hip measurements. Buy the pattern that has your size. Many times you will fit in several sizes because we have all different shapes. Patterns are designed to be multi-sized. This is the beauty of making your own clothing, You can get a custom fit everytime.

saving gas
When shopping for fabric always remember to read the entire pattern envelope. Many time things like notions, interfacing, and fabric are all listed in different areas. Some patterns have options to customize sleeves, collars etc. These part of a garment will be listed in different area of the envelope. Save gas and time and get all your supplies at once. Five minutes reading the back of a pattern envelope can save you a day of shopping and a half a tank of gas.

Notches on Pattern pieces
When laying a pattern piece out instead of cutting into the pattern for notches draw them out with a pencil. Then when you cut out your pattern piece cut them outward away from the seam allowance. This will help eliminate any cutting mistakes for first time sewers that are unsure of their scissor skills.
